PSC Miscellaneous

Public Service Commission, West Bengal conducts the Miscellaneous Services Recruitment Examination to recruit candidates for various posts. It takes place annually or when the Commission announces the date. The Miscellaneous exam is a 3-stage examination - Preliminary, Final, and Personality Test.

Latest Updates and Notification

  • The interview of Miscellaneous 2018 will be taken through online mode. It is scheduled from May 5, 2021.
  • Commission is yet to release the dates of Personality Test for Miscellaneous 2019 Exam.

Age Eligibility

According to the last notification released by the Commission for Miscellaneous 2019 Exam, the age of the candidates should be not below 20 years but not more than 39 years on 01.01.2019.

Concession in age

            S.C. & S.T. candidates can get an age relaxation of 5 years and B.C. (Non-creamy layer) candidates are eligible for 3 year age relaxation. In the case of Persons with Disabilities (PWD), the upper age limit is 45 years. S.C./S.T./B.C. candidates of other States shall be treated as general candidates and no relaxation is applicable for them.

  • Date of birth as‌ ‌recorded‌ ‌only‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌Madhyamik‌‌or‌ ‌equivalent‌ ‌certificate, will be accepted.
  • The age limits apply to all the candidates whether in Government service or not.

Educational Qualification

  • As per the Miscellaneous 2019 notification educational qualification criteria, the candidate must have a degree from any recognised University or its equivalent.
  • Additionally, the aspirant should have the ability to read, write and speak in Bengali (not required for those whose mother tongue is Nepali).

Exam Stages

The exam is used to be conducted in 3 phases as mentioned below.

  • Prelims Exam (Objective type)
  • Final Exam (Conventional type — Written)
  • Personality Test

Prelims exam is a screening test to shortlist candidates for the Final Exam. Candidates who qualify the Final Exam are eligible for the Personality Test. Final Merit List will be prepared on the basis of the total marks obtained in the Final Exam and that is obtained in the Personality Test taken together.  

 

The complete Miscellaneous exam pattern is discussed below.

 

Prelims Exam

  • The exam consists of only one MCQ paper containing 100 questions carrying 2 marks each.
  • The questions are asked from General Studies (150 marks) and Arithmatic (50 marks).
  • The time duration of the exam is 1.5 hour.
  • The Prelims Exam is only a screening test for the selection of candidates for admission to the Final Exam.
  • The marks obtained in the Prelims Exam will not be considered for preparing the final merit list.

 

Final Exam

The exam consists of 3 papers of Conventional type questions and the exam of all 3 papers is held on the same day. The details of subject, marks and time duration for 3 papers are provided below.

Some important points regarding Final Exam

  • Paper-III is divided in two groups. Group A consists of questions from General Studies carrying 100 marks and Group B consists of questions from Arithmatic.
  • Answers for Group A (General Studies) part should be in English or in Bengali or in Nepali.
  • Answers for Group B (Arithmatic) part should be in English or in Bengali.
  • It should be kept in mind that all the answers for individual group must be in one and same language.

Candidates with locomotor disability/cerebral palsy/low vision will be allowed compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour.

 

Personality Test

The Commission has announced that the interview of the Miscellaneous 2018 examination will be taken in online mode. The following things to be noted:

  • Candidates will receive their time slots on their e-mail IDs registered with the Commission.
  • One can take this interview from any location.
  • A candidate has to make himself/herself available online 30 minutes ahead of their time slot.
  • Candidates should make sure that the place where they take their interview is a well-illuminated one without the presence of anyone else with them.
  • Candidates are advised to keep their mobile phones handy just in case the video call is struck due to unseen circumstances.
  • The candidates must upload the following scanned documents at the official website of the Commission at least three working days ahead of the fixed date for interview are:
    • Recent passport-sized colored photograph
    • Admit Card of Madhyamik/equivalent examination showing the date of birth of the candidate and language(s) studied
    • Graduation Certificate/Mark Sheet
    • SC/ST/OBC certificate, if applicable
    • Current ‘NCL’ certificate (for OBC candidates only)
    • PWD certificate, if applicable
    • Choice sheet in the format provided at ‘Annexure-A’

 

The above mentioned documents have to be produced before a Group-A officer and a certificate in the format provided at ‘Annexure-B’ has to be obtained from the officer and needs to be uploaded at the official website of Commission along with the scanned copies of the above-mentioned certificates/documents.

Syllabus for the Exam

The detailed syllabus for Prelims and Final examination has been stated below:

  • General Studies (Prelims and Final Exam): Questions are set to judge the General Knowledge of a candidate in different areas.
  • Arithmatic (Prelims and Final Exam): Questions are asked of Madhyamik standard of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.
  • The standard of Paper-I and II of the Final Exam is of Higher Secondary (10+2) Exam of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.
