The Fire Operator examination is conducted by the West Bengal Public Service Commission or WBPSC. The principle duty of fire operator to protect life and environment. The process of the examination is divided into four stages. Candidates should qualify each stage to appear the next one. The stages are Written Examination, Physical Measurement Test, Endurance Test, Personality Test.

Age Limitation

The applying candidate cannot be less than 18 years and not more than 27 years. However, some age relaxation is provided for the upper age limit to the reserved categories, which is elaborated in the table below:

Educational Qualification

Candidates must have passed the Madhyamik examination, or its equivalent from any Govt. recognized Board or Institution.

Ability to read, write and also speak in Bengali (except for those candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali)

Preferably, but not compulsorily, Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering OR Mechanical Engineering OR Automobile Engineering certificate from Industrial Training Institute or its equivalent, as decided by the Commission.

Preferable, but not compulsorily, Swimming certificate from a Government recognized club or institute.

Percentage/Marks

After the written examination, WBPSC releases the cut off list. Candidates must have to score the same or more marks than the cut-off  to qualify for the physical measurement and endurance tests. The West Bengal Public Service Commission determines the cut off based on various factors such as the number of applicants, number of vacancies available, category of the candidate, and overall performance of the candidates in the examinations. The WBPSC Fire Operator cut off for the year 2020 is yet to be announced, but the candidates can go through the expected cut off 2020 for different categories, which are given below:

Exam Process

The candidates have to clear four steps of the examination to be selected for the post of Fire Operator in the West Bengal Fire Services under the Department of Fire and Emergency Services in the Government of West Bengal. 

Written Examination

 The written examination of WBPSC Fire Operator consists of  Multiple choice questions. It will test the candidate’s basic subject knowledge. The total marks of the written examination is 80 and candidates must have scored 80 percent to select for the next step.

Physical Measurement Test

The candidates who have cleared in the written examination will be called for the Physical Measurement test and Physical Endurance Test. The physical measurement requirements are the same as the ones mentioned in the eligibility criteria section.

Endurance Test

 The endurance test is taken to check the physical ability of the candidates. This examination consists of a series of sports events that the candidates must successfully complete . Candidates have to pass any four of the tests explained in detail in the eligibility criteria section.

(a) 1000 metre run in 5 minutes.

(b) Ladder climbing in 20 seconds.

(c) Lifting and carrying a sandbag of 63.5 kilograms continuously for at least 50 metres.

(d) Run up three storeys of the standard staircase in 1 minute.

(e) Rope climbing using only hands in 60 seconds.

(f) High Jump of 1.22 metres or more.

 

Personality Test

To appear the Personality Test candidates should qualify first three steps of the examination those are, the written exam, the physical measurement test and endurance test. This test carries maximum 10 percent of the total marks. There is no specified syllabus for the Personality test, but the candidates can be faced some general knowledge and current affairs questions. 

After the Personality test is done the candidate has to submit documents and certificates for verification. The required documents are as followed

(a) Original Certificates and photocopies of duly self-attested certificates which shows proof of age (example: SSLC certificate)

(b) Original Certificates and photocopies of duly self-attested certificates showing proof of educational qualifications (example: diploma or degree certificates)

(c) Certificate from the Head of the Organization / Department or Competent Authority for experience claimed, mentioning the exact duration of employment and field of experience from the appropriate authority. The certificate must also indicate the nature of duties performed / experience obtained in the post

(d) Certificate in support of a candidate’s claim to be SC, ST, BC from a competent authority of the government of West Bengal

(e) Certificate in support of Persons with Disabilities (40 percent and above) claim from a competent authority of West Bengal (such as a Medical Board constituted at Govt. Medical College Hospitals in Kolkata, District Hospitals & Sub-Divisional Hospitals)

(f) Certificates for meritorious sportspersons issued by a competent authority

Syllabus

The WBPFC Fire Operator written test contains three subjects English, General Studies and Arithmetic. This examination will be on 10th standard.

General Studies Matters of everyday observation including everyday Science,

current events and problems with special reference to India

and elementary knowledge of Indian History and Indian Geography.

Arithmetic Divisibility, Fractions, Decimals, Recurring Decimals, Simplification, H.C.F., L.C.M., Partnership, Average, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Simple Interest, Profit and Loss, Time and Distance, Area of Rectangles and Squares.

How to apply

The steps for the WBPSC Fire Operator Registration is as follows:

Step 1- Candidates should check the official website of the Public Service Commission, West Bengal

Step 2- On the homepage of the website, click on “One Time Registration” link, available on top of the left panel

Step 3- Candidates should fill in all the personal information and upload the scanned passport size photo and signature to get their unique user ID and password. Candidates are advised to note this user ID and password down for future use

Step 4- Candidates who have already completed the One Time Registration earlier do not need to register again and can use their user ID and password that was previously generated to log in and apply

Step 5 – Click on the link “Login to your Account” to log in to the dashboard, which is available on the right-side panel on the home page just under the ‘Candidate’s Corner’ section

Step 6- Candidates should provide their user ID, Mother’s Maiden Surname, Last School Attended, Grandfather’s Name. The names entered should exactly match with the ones entered in the One Time Registration Form

Step 7- If all the data is found to match correctly, the candidate will be given a new password. Candidates must preserve the new password for future reference

Step 8- In the dashboard, find the name of the Fire Operator Examination and click on the Apply Now link next to it to open a new application form

Step 9- Fill in all the necessary details such as your name, educational qualifications, address, phone number, etc.

Step 10- The photograph and signature uploaded during One Time Registration will be displayed, and candidates will be given the option to edit them

Step 11- Before clicking the submit button, be sure that all the details are accurate, as this will be treated as the final form, after which it will not be possible to make further changes

Step 12- After submitting, the candidate can proceed to the fee payment through online or offline mode

For General, OBC (West Bengal and other states) and SC/ST (Other states) the application fees is Rs. 110/-

For SC/ST candidates of West Bengal & Persons with disabilities (PWD) with physical disability of 40 percent above the application fees is NIL
